UNICEF Reports Over 50,000 Palestinian Children Affected in Gaza Conflict

Gaza City: The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has reported that more than 50,000 Palestinian children have been killed or injured in the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip since the war began on October 7, 2023. This alarming statistic highlights the severe impact of the conflict on the youngest and most vulnerable segment of the population.

According to Jordan News Agency, Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, expressed deep concern over the heavy toll the war is taking on children. He cited recent incidents of devastating attacks as evidence of the conflict's brutal consequences. One such incident involved the Al-Najjar family in Khan Yunis, where videos showed the burned and dismembered bodies of children being pulled from the rubble. Of the 10 siblings under the age of 12, only one child reportedly survived, albeit with serious injuries.

In another tragic event, a school in Gaza City was attacked, resulting in the deaths of at least 31 people, including 18 children. This attack underscored the ongoing risk to children in what should be safe spaces.

UNICEF reported that since the cessation of a ceasefire on March 18, 1,309 children have been killed and another 3,738 injured. The organization continues to call for an end to the violence and for the protection of civilians, particularly children. They urge all parties to adhere to international humanitarian and human rights laws, facilitate the immediate access of humanitarian supplies, and ensure the release of all hostages.

The conflict, spanning nearly 20 months, has seen the targeting of numerous shelters, including schools and hospitals, areas that were supposed to be safe zones as designated by the Israeli military. This has resulted in significant casualties, predominantly affecting women and children, as per official data.
