Water Ministry Signs £1.7 Million Deal to Expand Sewage Services in Ain al-Basha, Baqa’a Camp

Amman: The Ministry of Water and Irrigation signed an agreement on Tuesday with Al-Nashama Contracting Company to implement a mixed sewage project serving the Ain al-Basha area and Baqa'a refugee camp.

According to Jordan News Agency, the project is funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and is valued at £1.729 million.

In a statement, Secretary General of the Water Authority, Sufyan Batayneh, said the project is part of the ministry's broader sewage strategy, which aims to enhance infrastructure efficiency, protect the environment and groundwater, and improve public health and service conditions for residents. Batayneh noted that upon completion, the project will extend sewage services to approximately 90 percent of the Ain al-Basha and Baqa'a areas.

The scope of the project includes constructing 14 km of pipelines, implementing 218 house connections, replacing 1.5 km of existing pipeline to handle increased volumes from the Baqa'a refugee camp, and building 5 km of new sewage lines within the camp. He expressed appreciation for the support provided by international donors, emphasizing that such partnerships enable the water sector to address ongoing challenges and reduce the burden on citizens.
