Partly cloudy weather is expected to prevail on Monday, with a chance of scattered showers in various parts of the Kingdom, accompanied by thunder at times, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily brief.

The weather department warned of slippery roads in areas experiencing rain, and of poor visibility in the Badia due to dust.

Over the next two days, moderate weather conditions are forecast countrywide, with clouds at various altitudes and westerly moderate winds, the JMD added.

The highs in Amman and other highlands across the Kingdom today will range between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius, dropping at night to 15C or even 11C in the southern highlands. In the Gulf city of Aqaba, it will be hotter with mercury reaching a high of 32C and a low of 22C.

The German Embassy in Amman, Sunday evening, held a reception on the occasion of the country’s National Day, attended by a number of guests and the embassy’s partners from the fields of culture, archaeology, academia and media.

During the ceremony, German ambassador in Amman Bernhard Kampmann stressed that Jordan and Germany maintain strong ties, noting that the relations between the two countries have continued since the establishment of the Kingdom, and there is a mutual trust.

The ambassador also highlighted that Germany’s relations and partnership with Jordan and its foreign policy will continue after the formation of the new government.

“Due to the Corona pandemic, the German Embassy is holding several smaller receptions this year between 3 October (Day of German Unity) and 9 November (anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall) for its partners in the political, economic, development, humanitarian, cultural, media and civil society fields,” he indicated.

The Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) and the Royal Engineering Corps Directorate signed an agreement to clean and remove sediment and silt from the Mujib Dam.

A statement by the authority on Monday said that the deal, inked by JVA Acting Secretary General Manar Mahasna and Director of the royal corps Brigadier General Imad Khamaiseh, aims to maintain the dam’s storage capacity in gearing up for the upcoming wet season.

The agreement came as part of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides on exchanging expertise and heavy engineering machinery needed to implement water harvesting projects, excavations as well as earth dams.

The two parties have began cleaning the Mujib dam, which has a storage capacity of 29 million cubic meters (mcm) of water and is used for drinking, irrigation and other industrial uses, the statement noted.

Jordan took part in the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which kicked off Monday in Glasgow, Scotland.

Representing the Kingdom at the summit is the Minister of Environment Muawieh Radaideh, who is heading a delegation that includes representatives from various sectors from government institutions, the private sector and civil society organizations.

The Jordanian delegation will participate in all the conference’s meetings and activities, which provides an opportunity to exchange expertise to develop climate action and enhance sustainable development in Jordan and to achieve the national contributions to address climate change and reduce carbon emissions.

The Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) on Monday launched a nationwide campaign to encourage savings and sound financial planning. The “Save to Thrive” Initiative is designed by the CBJ in cooperation with a number of public financial institutions and government and non-government stakeholders.

CBJ Governor Zyad Fareez said the campaign is designed to enhance financial literacy in general, and promote a culture of savings among all individuals of different age groups, in order to strengthen their financial resilience and enable them to pursue sound financial planning.

The Central Bank said in a statement that the initiative coincides with the World Savings Day, and is part of its tireless endeavor to improve the lives of individuals, develop the national economy, and serve the goals of financial inclusion in the Kingdom by expanding and improving access to various financial services, including payment, transfer, savings, credit and insurance services.

The initiative targets all individuals in the Kingdom in general and the following groups in particular: low-income people, youth (15-24), women, and school students.

Six airplanes carrying Italian, German, Polish, Greek, and Czech tourists are set to arrive in the Kingdom later on Monday, according to Director-General of the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) Abdulrazzaq Arabiyat.

The flights, operated by low-cost carriers, have been already coordinated with the JTB, said Arabiyat in a statement Monday, stressing that that the board’s cooperation with low-cost airlines companies is part of a recently-announced government plan to attract 4.5 million tourists by 2023.

He pointed to JTB’s continuous work with the Ministry of Tourism and airline companies to energize tourism in Jordan and be the favorite destination for tourists from all over the world. Arabiyat added that the Board, in cooperation with the ministry, is working to prop up tourists numbers again after Covid-19’s outcomes.

The total pre-tax profits of 168 companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange amounted to about JD1.273 billion for the first three quarters of 2021, compared with JD438.5 million for the same period in 2020, indicating a major increase of 190.4 percent.

The post-tax profits (attributable to the shareholders or net profit) of these companies soared by a massive 285 percent, standing at JD883 million, against JD229.3 million for the same companies and the same period in 2020, according to Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the ASE Bassam Abu Abbas.

In a statement Monday, Abu Abbas indicated the figures are for 168 firms out of a total of 173 listed companies, which provided quarterly financial data to the bourse.

In its sectorial breakdown of the figures, the ASE said the post-tax profits of the industrial sector shot up by 452.1 percent to JD336.2 million in the nine-month period, against JD61 million reported in the same period of 2020.

The services sector netted a post-tax profit of JD80.6 million compared with a loss of JD38.9 million in the corresponding period of the past year, signaling a 307-percent rise.

As for the financial sector, it posted a profit of about JD466 million, compared with JD 207.4 million for the same January-September period of 2020, an increase of 124.8 percent.
