AMMAN: The Ministry of Agriculture has signed six pivotal agreements aimed at advancing water harvesting projects in the Southern Jordan Valley. These agreements are designed to bolster the water-energy-food nexus within the agricultural sector and create job opportunities for local communities, according to a statement from the ministry.
According to Jordan News Agency, Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat signed the agreements on Monday with leaders of local cooperative associations. The initiative is part of broader efforts to optimize agricultural resources through innovative solutions like solar-powered water pumps. These pumps have been installed to facilitate the distribution of water from harvesting reservoirs to cooperative farms in the area.
Minister Hneifat underscored the ministry's commitment to expanding these activities, pointing to their pivotal role in the efficient utilization of water from earthen reservoirs. The focus is not only on resource optimization but also on generating employment opportunities for local residents.
The leaders of the cooperative associations involved emphasized the project's impact on reducing groundwater depletion and lowering energy costs in agriculture. They noted that the initiative is expected to significantly increase the income of farmers who benefit from the water harvesting reservoirs, thereby contributing to the sustainability of agricultural practices in the region.
