Amman: Minister of Social Development and Head of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Women's Empowerment, Wafa Bani Mustafa, on Wednesday engaged in discussions with UN Women Regional Director, Moez Doraid, focusing on cooperation in implementing the Middle East Women's Initiative (MEWI). Bani Mustafa emphasized the significance of the partnership with UN Women, which has contributed to enhancing women's participation across various sectors.
According to Jordan News Agency, during the meeting, Bani Mustafa highlighted the MEWI's role in promoting women's employment in Arab countries, including Jordan, with the objective of increasing their economic participation. She pointed out the alignment of the women's empowerment strategy within the Economic Modernization Vision (EMV) with MEWI, identifying opportunities for cooperation.
Bani Mustafa noted that recent achievements fell within the scope of the EMV's executive plan and Jordan's political, economic, and administrative modernization paths. These efforts reflect Jordan's commitment to raising women's economic participation. One of the key goals under the EMV's women economic empowerment axis is to boost women's participation to 28%.
Moez Doraid expressed appreciation for the progress made in Jordan, aligning with UN Women's initiatives. He acknowledged Jordan as a key partner in the MEWI due to notable achievements in women's economic empowerment. Doraid noted that Jordan has made significant strides in updating legislation to advance the status of Jordanian women.
Additionally, Doraid reviewed the MEWI regional program's objective to ensure a 5% increase in women's employment before 2023 and enhance their access to job opportunities.
