China Opposes External Interference in Iran Amid Ongoing Protests

Beijing: China on Monday declared its opposition to any external interference in Iran, as the nation grapples with over a week of widespread protests resulting in reported casualties. "China hopes the Iranian government and people can overcome current difficulties to maintain national stability," stated Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during a press briefing in Beijing. He emphasized China's firm stance against external interference in Iran's domestic affairs.

According to Anadolu Agency - English, the protests in Iran have persisted for eight consecutive days, expanding to at least 222 locations across 78 cities. The unrest, sparked by deteriorating economic conditions, has been documented by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). The demonstrations have been observed in 26 provinces, featuring street protests, labor strikes, and university-led actions, as reported by HRANA, which was founded in 2009 by Iranian human rights advocates.

The protest movement has engaged 17 universities and continues despite intensified security measures aimed at quelling public gatherings. HRANA reports that at least 20 individuals have lost their lives during the tumult, including a member of the law enforcement-security forces. The unrest has also resulted in at least 51 injuries, predominantly inflicted by pellets and plastic bullets fired by security personnel. The casualties include students, laborers, and civilians aged between 16 and 45.

Lin Jian highlighted China's commitment to "uphold the UN Charter and international fairness and justice," urging all parties to contribute towards peace and stability in the Middle East. He further mentioned China's foreign policy of partnership over alliance, referencing the 25-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement signed with Iran in 2021.
