Energy Minister: Samra Power Plant Covers 30% of Jordan’s Electricity Needs

Zarqa: Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Thursday said that the Samra Electric Power Generation Company currently provides around 30 percent of the Kingdom's electricity needs, positioning it among the largest and most vital energy providers in Jordan.

According to Jordan News Agency, speaking during a ceremony held in the Hashemite area of Zarqa Governorate to mark the 79th Independence Day, Kharabsheh underscored the strategic importance of the energy sector, describing it as a primary pillar of the national economy and a key driver for other sectors under the Economic Modernization Vision.

He highlighted the government's commitment to transforming existing challenges into opportunities and advancing national ambitions, stressing that the vision serves as a comprehensive roadmap for development.

Kharabsheh revealed that the government is working to meet all of Jordan's natural gas requirements from the al-Risha field within the next five years, through the continued efforts of the Jordan National Petroleum Company (JNPC) staff.

The minister reviewed major milestones achieved in the energy sector, pointing out that the Samra Power Plant began commercial operations in 2005 with a 100-megawatt gas turbine. Its current nominal capacity has reached 1,241 megawatts, and is projected to grow to 1,834 megawatts by 2025.

He noted that the plant is managed efficiently by national expertise, with a large percentage of its workforce drawn from Zarqa Governorate, thereby reinforcing its role in supporting local communities and creating employment opportunities.

For his part, Samra Power Plant General Manager Sami Zawateen praised the company's achievements since its establishment, noting that electricity production has increased nearly twelve-fold. He added that Jordan has made notable strides in the energy sector, particularly in electricity generation.
