The United Nations announced, on Thursday, the suspension of its humanitarian operations in Niger, due to the coup in the country.
The Office of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations Organization OCHA stated that the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Niger increased from 1.9 million in 2017 to 4.3 million in 2023, while the number of victims of acute food insecurity is expected to reach three million between June and Augest before the next harvest.”
Forces from the Presidential Guard in Niger detained yesterday, Wednesday, President Bazoum at the presidential residence, at a time when several countries and international organizations expressed their condemnation of any attempt to seize power by force in Niger.
Early on Thursday, military personnel announced on national television that President Mohammed Bazoum had been removed from power, and the situation in Niamey is still ambiguous, after the suspension of the work of institutions and the closure of the country's borders.
