Amman: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) vowed on Sunday to continue providing services across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, defying Israel's ban. The refugee agency still offers services to Palestinians and that its crews in health, shelters and distribution centers are still working and providing basic and primary services to residents of the Strip, UNRWA Media Officer Enas Hamdan said in comments on the agency's website.
According to Jordan News Agency, Hamdan described the Knesset's (Israel's parliament) decision as "unprecedented and dangerous," highlighting its impact on humanitarian and necessary operations, "particularly during this period in which we provide all assistance to the Palestinians." Sixty percent of food aid that entered Gaza after the ceasefire was through UNRWA and was distributed by the agency's crews. This aid included psychological support services to about half a million Gazans, and Hamdan warned of the danger if these services were curtailed or stopped.
Hamdan emphasized the essential role of UNRWA, especially now, affirming that work in Gaza is ongoing. The agency remains committed to staying and providing services to the population of the war-torn strip.
