King meets with UK FM, calls for political solutions to regional crises

His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday reiterated that crises in the Middle East require stepping up regional and international efforts to reach political solutions that bring stability and security for the region’s peoples.

During a meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss in London, King Abdullah expressed Jordan’s support for efforts to safeguard Syria’s sovereignty, stability, territorial integrity, and the unity of its people.

His Majesty called for reaching just and comprehensive peace, on the basis of the two-state solution, guaranteeing the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and viable Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In addition, the King said Jordan will continue its efforts to safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship.

His Majesty also stressed the need to maintain support for UNRWA to sustain its relief services in line with its UN mandate.

The meeting covered means of boosting economic, trade, and tourism cooperation between the two countries.

For her part, Secretary Truss expressed her country’s keenness on strengthening its historical ties with Jordan and expanding them in various fields, pointing to the UK’s support for Jordan’s development efforts, and in providing educational and health service to refugees.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and Jordan’s Ambassador to the UK Manar Dabbas attended the meetings.

Yarmouk University, Siemens talk future cooperation, projects

President of Yarmouk University (YU), Dr. Islam Massad, discussed with the Founder and Head of the Innovation Think Tank (ITT) at Siemens Healthcare in Germany, Dr. Sultan Haider, and representative of its regional office, Sayed Mahdi, ways to launch joint research and training cooperation programs and projects.

Massad pointed to the importance of stimulating YU’s students to develop their potentials and expand their scientific awareness, which would enable the university’s alumni to be armed with creativity and innovation in various fields.

On future projects, Massad pointed out the possibility of launching a Siemens incubator, specialized in leadership and innovation at the university’s Hijjawi College of Technology Engineering and train YU’s students in a company’s approved program in the medical devices and equipment areas.

The talks also tackled cooperation in the establishment of a fellowship program to send YU’s researchers, faculty members and students to the company’s various laboratories and incubators.

Haider, for his part, presented the company’s services to students at various educational levels, focusing on medical technology and health care fields.

The company’s mission and vision, Haider said, seek to support “pioneering” initiatives, especially with universities and hospitals in various countries worldwide, voicing its readiness to cooperate with the university to establish an incubator for leadership and innovation.

King, UK PM discuss enhancing strategic ties

His Majesty King Abdullah and United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson, during a meeting in London on Thursday, highlighted the deeply-rooted ties between Jordan and the UK, as this year marks the centenary of their diplomatic relations.

During a meeting at 10 Downing Street, King Abdullah and Prime Minister Johnson discussed the strategic bilateral relations, as well as regional and international developments.

The meeting covered means of strengthening economic, trade, and defence cooperation.

His Majesty commended the United Kingdom’s efforts in hosting the UN Climate Change Conference UK 2021 (COP26), adding that he is looking forward to participating in it.

The meeting also covered the importance of stepping up regional and international efforts in the war against terrorism, within a holistic approach.

His Majesty reaffirmed the need to achieve just and comprehensive peace, on the basis of the two-state solution, guaranteeing the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and viable Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, as the only way to achieve regional stability and security.

The King also underlined Jordan’s steadfast efforts to safeguard Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, under the Hashemite Custodianship, stressing the need to maintain support for UNRWA.

For his part, Prime Minister Johnson expressed the UK’s support for regional economic projects, commending Jordan’s hosting of refugees, including Syrians, and providing them with health and educational services.

Johnson also lauded Jordan’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, and its efforts in mitigating the impact of climate change.

King meets UK House of Commons speaker, foreign and defence committees, and members of Jordan Group

His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday held a number of meetings at the Palace of Westminster in London, with House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle, chairs and members of the House of Commons foreign affairs and defence committees, and the All-Party Parliamentary Jordan Group.

The meetings focused on the historical and strategic relations between Jordan and the United Kingdom, in addition to the latest regional and international developments.

Discussions also covered means of enhancing bilateral relations, with King Abdullah expressing appreciation of the UK’s support for Jordan through various development programmes, as well as by providing assistance to refugees and host communities.

His Majesty reiterated Jordan’s keenness on enhancing cooperation with the UK in addressing global challenges, including climate change and food security, as well as countering the humanitarian and economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the Palestinian issue, the King reaffirmed the importance of continuing to work towards just and comprehensive peace, on the basis of the two-state solution, stressing the need to maintain support for UNRWA to sustain its services.

His Majesty called for ending unilateral Israeli measures that could undermine stability and the prospects of achieving peace.

The meetings also covered the developments in Syria, with the King reiterating Jordan’s support for efforts to safeguard Syria’s sovereignty, stability, territorial integrity, and the unity of its people.

For his part, UK House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle pointed to the historical ties between the two countries, noting that this year marks the centenary of diplomatic relations between Jordan and the UK.

Meanwhile, members of the House of Commons foreign affairs and defence committees expressed their concern over the Israeli authorities’ decision to build new settlements in the West Bank.

They also highlighted the deep-rooted relations between Jordan and the UK, and the need to advance them further, commending Jordan’s efforts in hosting Syrian refugees, and providing them with health and educational services.

Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Jordan Group expressed support for Jordan’s efforts, under the leadership of His Majesty, in pursuit of regional peace and stability.

The group includes members of the UK House of Commons and House of Lords from several political parties, and seeks to enhance parliamentary cooperation between Jordan and the UK, and to build on the ties of friendship and historical partnership.

Jordan participates in 3rd AOHR meeting in Cairo

Jordan participated in the 3rd meeting of the Arab Observatory for Human Rights (AOHR), which was recently held in Cairo.

During the meeting, the participants discussed ways to develop the AOHR strategic action plan and preparations to form internal social, legal and economic committees to achieve the AOHR’s vision in the defense of Arab issues.

Rasmiya Kaabneh, a former member of Jordan’s Lower House and member of the AOHR Board of Trustees, represented Jordan in the meeting.

Kaabneh said the AOHR does not “interfere in the internal affairs of countries,” and carries out its duties using contact channels with organizations and bodies to consolidate human rights values.

The AOHR will cooperate with Arab countries to follow up laws and legislation approved by Arab parliaments, she said.

The discussions, she said, will adopt a plan to work on the related Arab document, submitted from the Arab countries conference held in Tunisia.

Azaiza, Benner explore ways to offer support to Jordan’s transport sector

Minister of Transport, Wajih Azaiza, met on Thursday, with World Bank Resident Representative in Jordan, Holly Benner.

Discussions went over cooperation aspects and ways to benefit from the bank’s expertise and technical assistance that can be provided to Jordan’s transport sector, according to a ministry statement.

The minister briefed Benner on the most important needs of Jordan’s transport sector, primarily technical support in all fields related to studies, training and various expertise.

Benner, for her part, stressed the importance of learning about the various technical and training needs of Jordan’s transport sector, expressing the World Bank’s readiness to provide the necessary technical needs.

Efforts seek to improve QAIA’s passenger services-Transport minister

Minister of Transport, Wajih Azaiza, stressed the importance of “concerted” efforts to develop the level of services provided to passengers at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA).

The minister’s remarks came at a meeting held on Thursday, with Chairman of Airport International Group (AIG), Fernando Echegaray, and its CEO, Nicolas Claude.

Discussions went over ways to develop and modernize the airport’s work mechanism, after QAIA was awarded the title of ‘Best Airport by Size and Region: Middle East’ for airports serving 5 to 15 million passengers, based on the 2020 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Survey, according to a ministry statement.

The talks also tackled the challenges that faced the air traffic during the Covid-19 pandemic, which had a “negative” impact on the flight movement in Jordan and the world, and ways to overcome these hardships and work to increase the airport’s competitiveness, which would raise the level of services provided to travelers, the statement added.

The minister called for the need to orchestrate efforts and work in a team spirit to maintain QAIA ‘s ranking as a “distinguished” airport in the region with its services and facilitations.

The minister also said the “end” goal is to orchestrate all efforts and ensure the level of quality services provided to travelers through QAIA.

Facebook changes its name to Meta

Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a major rebrand.

The company said it would better “encompass” what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like Virtual Reality (VR).

The change does not apply to its individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, only the parent company that owns them.

In 2015, Google restructured its company calling its parent firm Alphabet, however, the name has not caught on.

Lebanon to receive Jordan’s electricity following agreement on contract terms with Syria

Jordan on Thursday hosted a ministerial meeting for ministers concerned in electricity affairs in the Kingdom , Syria and Lebanon, to discuss the latest developments in the project to supply Lebanon with part of its electricity needs from Jordan through the Syrian electric grid.

The meeting was attended by Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Kharabsheh, Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water, Dr. Walid Fayyad, and Syrian Minister of Electricity, Ghassan Zamil.

Kharabsheh, speaking at a press conference following the meeting, said the three countries have reached the final version of the contract to supply Lebanon with Jordan’s electricity through Syrian territory, stressing the readiness of the Kingdom’s electric grid to transfer electricity.

Electricity quantities to be delivered to Lebanon were the most prominent issue that was agreed upon between the three countries, Kharabsheh said, adding that the amount to be supplied Lebanon will nearly stand at 150 megawatts of electricity from midnight until six a.m and 250 megawatts during the remaining periods.

In response to a question, Kharabsheh referred to technical issues on the Syrian grid that are being solved and will be completed before the end of 2021, adding that the process of supplying Lebanon with electricity is expected to begin early 2022.

For his part, the Lebanese minister said the agreement would contribute to achieving and sustaining Lebanon’s energy security, adding that environmentally and financially “appropriate” formula and conditions related to cost of delivering Jordan’s electricity to Lebanon had been reached.

The Lebanese official affirmed approval of the World Bank to fund the project to supply Lebanon with Jordan’s electricity.

In turn, Syrian minister said his country is “serious” about rehabilitation of its electrical interconnection grid with Jordan, adding that this process has begun at a cost of $5.5 million.

Syria will not be a “stumbling” block in the face of this agreement, he said, adding that Syrian grid will be ready to launch the electric transmission project by the end of 2021, the Syrian minister said.
