Amman: Lina Ennab, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, recently held a meeting with Noha Bawazir, the UNESCO Representative in Jordan, to discuss the latest developments in the collaboration between their organizations. The focus was on safeguarding Jordanian sites listed on the World Heritage List.
According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting emphasized leveraging UNESCO's expertise in technical tasks and the ministry's mechanisms for follow-up. Collaborative projects and ongoing files were discussed, highlighting the importance of cooperation in managing archaeological and heritage sites. Ennab stressed the need for coordination with UNESCO on matters related to World Heritage sites.
Bawazir revealed plans to organize a workshop in early March 2025, in collaboration with various authorities, including the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Department of Antiquities, and the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority. The workshop aims to establish frameworks for evaluating and conserving sites on both the World Heritage List and the tentative list, with input from experts in nomination procedures.
The meeting concluded with discussions on the Petra and Wadi Rum project. Both parties agreed on the importance of coordination and cooperation in this significant undertaking, which aims to preserve these renowned sites. The project will also involve the local community, fostering support through the development of unique tourism activities.
